JAI SHANKAR
On the auspicious occasion of Seemollanghan, I am starting a series on the 108 Names of Devi Lalita, invoking the blessings of Pujya Shrimat Sadyojat Shankarashram Swamiji and Lord Bhavanishankar. These Names are usually recited during Devi-poojan by Pujya Swamiji and hence I received many requests to give meanings of these Names. Each Name is quite long and is often a tongue-twister. I am giving the English translation sothat we know the meaning when we chant each name. Navaraatra is not faraway and so, it is imperative we know the meanings of these chants.
Compared to Names of Shiva, here I have less scope for speculative thought. I will have to be content more or less with just straight- forward translation. This Naamaavali is in Stutimanjari vide Devi-Poojanam section.
LALITA is an embodiment of grace (laalitya). We should speak gracefully (pada laalitya). Our thoughts must be graceful (bhaava laalitya). Our entire life must be enlivened with grace – in thought, speech and deed (vichaara, ucchaara, aachaara). This is a life-long exercise and is our best homage to Devi Lalita.
Goddess Lalita killed the demon BhanDa (BhaNDaasura) is the legend. As I have often said, Pauranic tales are always allegories, camouflaging a spiritual insight. BhanDa is the very antithesis of grace. A person who is indecorous, clumsy and awkward in his behaviour is BhaNDa. At best, he is a buffoon or a joker. This word has got woven into our sweet mother-tongue also.Don’t we call a shameless and vulgar person as ‘lajBHAND’?
A devout study of Lalita Sahasranaama shows how vast and varied are Her interests. She is the very epitome of culture and sophistication. We must learn to walk with Her, following Her footsteps. Our life must make room for Sangeeta, Saahitya and other fine arts, of which She is the patron deity. Don’t we call fine arts as LALITA-KALAA?l
Laalitya (grace) paves the way to Shree, mangalataa, auspiciousness. Laalitya and Shree go hand in hand.
For today, I am content with this introduction. Translation will be from tomorrow.
Shri Satish Kulkarni of Goregaon has once again graciously offered to open a webpage for this series. We appreciate his seva. To view the webpage please click on:

JAI SHANKAR
Dear Devotees,
I am starting the translation from 3rd September 2020. I am also giving corresponding names from Lalita Sahasranaama (LS) and Lalitaa Trishati wherever I could easily locate, for the benefit of the studious.
I wish to emphasise that our purpose of this Swaadhyaaya is limited. We should have the satisfaction that we understand each and every name when we chant either at home or along with Pujya Swamiji.
(Aum rajatācala śṛṅgāgra madhyasthāyai namo namaḥ)
Rajata (silver) achala (mountain) shringaagra
(Tip of the peak) madhyastha (who is in the centre).
Salutations to Her who dwells in the middle of the tip of the peak of Mt.Kailaasa. This shows Paarvati and Lalitaa represent the same Shakti. She is actually omnipresent.
She is everywhere. We can’t confine Her to just a nook and corner of Kailaasa.
As explained vide no .35 in SA (Aum Kailaasavaasine Namaha), Kailaasa represents symbolically the ecstatic dance of liberation ( kai – kaivalya, laasa – dance). So, the abode of Lalita represents the peak and the pinnacle of Brahmaananda
Compare no.55 in Lalita Sahasranaama (LS).
(Sumerushringa….).
(Aum himācala mahāvaṃśa pāvanāyai namo namaḥ)
Himaachala (Himaalaya) Mahaavamsha (great lineage) Paavana (purifies).
Salutations to Her who has sanctified the vast lineage of Himaalaya (with her birth as Himaalayaa’s daughter).
A Subhaashita says: (स जातो येन जातेन याति वंशः समुन्नतिम्।) “He is truly born, by whose birth the dynasty attains prosperity and glory.” By
virtue of Her birth, Himaalayaa’s family rose to fame.
Compare no.634 in LS.(Shailendra tanayaa).
(Aum śaṅkarārdhāṅga saundarya śarīrāyai namo namaḥ)
She looks all the more beautiful because She has occupied half of Shiva’s body. Salutations
to Her.
This refers to Shiva as Ardha-naareeshvara.
Matter and energy, substance and quality, word and its meaning are inseparable
(वागर्थाविव सम्पृक्तौ ). This Name signifies that Shiva and Shakti are inseparable. Its counterpart in Shiva’s is no.9 ( Aum Neela-lohitaaya Namaha).

(Aum lasanmarakata svacca vigrahāyai namo namaḥ)
Salutations to Her, whose body (vigraha) is as immaculate (svaccha) as the sparkling (lasan) emeralds (marakata).
This Name reminds us of no.86 in Shiva’s (Aum Shuddhavigrahaaya Namaha). What is God or Goddess if not pure? The impurity stands for lust, anger, greed, envy etc which defile our consciousness. Devi is untouched by them, hence her bewitching sparkle.

She is one with them all.

Similes vie with each other to tell us about Her beauty.

Saakshhatkaara, the coveted vision of our chosen deity(ishTa devataa)(in this case, Lalitaa) is the reward for TAPAS(devotion, discipline, dedication). One has to say ‘no’ to the world of senses, be very frugal and austere in the way of life. How much tapas, sweat and toil, go into the making of a very bright student, a good singer, a good dancer etc? Even God, says RgVeda, did tapas and Truth(satyam) and Righteousness(ritam) emerged from His ‘tapta'(heated) consciousness prior to creation. This is in the AghamarshaNa Sookta in our Sandhyaavandan book.

Lalitaa is shakti and shakti of every type is neutral and amoral. Electricity can do innumerable wonders, but, when short-
circuit happens, can burn down the house. Same is true about fire or any type of energy.Lalitaa is the mother of all shaktis.

Brahman, the Absolute, is the ocean of nectar in which we live, move and have our being. What a pity we are blissfully unaware of our true identity, and go about with a begging bowl, seeking trickles of pleasure here and there, thanks to Avidya(ignorance). Saint Kabir says: “I laugh when I hear that the fish in the sea is thirsty”.
(पानी में मीन प्यासी, मोहि सुनि सुनिआवत हांसी।)
How very true!
The gem-studded island, says the Taantric text Bhaavanopanishad, is our body(deho navaratna-dveepaha – no.7 in this text). I am yet to come across a more glorious and, at the same time, such a short, terse, tribute to the human body than this sootra. God has given us a bagful of gems , this miracle of a body. It behoves us to keep it that way. The benevolent Guru becomes relevant to our
lives in this context
Lalita resides in our heart, the middle region.

scriptures that involuntarily the soul is chanting Soऽham( I am He)(jeevo japati sarvadaa) during respiration. This goes on within us 24 x 7.
